Val Haslam - IsleStyle

Her love of fabric and buttons started as a child and by the age of twelve she was already accomplished on her mother's old Singer sewing machine. Her mother taught her to make her own clothes, design patterns and adapt or combine two patterns to make a unique outfit. Val was always on the lookout for a couple of yards of fabric to add to her stockpile, ready to replicate the latest 70's fashions she saw in boutiques like Chelsea Girl, Bus Stop and Biba, which were beyond her pocket money budget.

That love of creating something different and unique extends to her current designs. She uses Laxey Manx tartans, tweeds and wool, sometimes combined with upcycled designer fabrics, like Burberry, Laura Ashley and Liberty of London, upcycled denim and vintage buttons and brooches. By using upcycled fabrics and adornments there may be only one of a specific product. She also weaves corsage for that special evening or prom party. She is always happy to discuss individual requirements.

Val's designs are practical as well as attractive, like woolly teapot covers, travel sewing kits, mittens, cosy hot water bottle covers and brooches, making great presents or self-buys. Her pin brooches and slim wrist cuffs are ideal for choirs, dance groups and societies that go off-island to represent the Isle of Man and who want a small adornment to display their Manx heritage with pride.

Val can be contacted by messaging her on Facebook, or by email - [email protected] or telephone (07624) 245079.
